HYSTERIA

April 19 - June 5
Lindsey Acree, Kaitlin Sobiesiak, Jillian MacDougall, & FAVAL

Curated by Lindsey Acree

Eleventh Hour Art will debut their next exhibition, Hysteria, opening April 19th. The gallery has recently been recognized by NY1 for their support of emerging artists when founder Lindsey Acree was named “New Yorker of the week” in March 2024.

In Hysteria, artists explore the ideas of control, repression, representation, and identity through their own mediums and lenses. The exhibition will provoke discussions around the psychology of sex– how sex affects both our own identities and the roles assigned to us. Acree’s work specifically explores the weaponization of psychology and how medical diagnoses have historically been used as a means of control.

Throughout the exhibition, the gallery will feature a screening of renowned director Kate Novacks short film, Hysterical Girl, as well as a panel discussions with women psychologists and artists, and a classical music concert celebrating the work of Florence Price, a black composer born in the 1800’s whose work was relatively unknown until today.

Hysteria is dedicated to Cecilia Gentili who passed away suddenly on February 6th, 2024. Eleventh Hour Art and Cecelia were collaborating on presenting her new performance piece, set to debut during the run of the exhibition. Cecilia spent her life advocating for the rights of transgender individuals, sex workers, and immigrants. She was an actress, writer, activist, and friend who will continue to inspire and look over us. A portion of all profits from Hysteria will be donated to Cecilia’s Legacy Fund, which will continue her life’s work to uplift trans people, sex workers, and immigrants into liberation and joy.

Artist and Curator:
Lindsey Acree was born in Hawaii and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She is a multimedia visual artist whose works investigate, challenge, and celebrate womanhood, sexuality, and the body. She collages material including found objects, melted wax, dollar bills, resin, hygiene products, and paint. In addition to her artistic practice, she is the founder of Eleventh Hour Art, and works to support New York based emerging artists through her growing platform. More Here.

Additional artists:
Kaitlin Sobiesiak
is an accomplished illustrator, artist, and art director from New York, living and working in Brooklyn. Her work explores unapologetic feminine forms, traversing the spectrum from coquettish subtlety to bodacious bombshells. Through her paintings, illustrations, and mixed media work, Sobiesiak explores and subverts the construction and expectations of the female form. In the act of turning Frankenstein’s monster upon its creator, her work confronts the male gaze with the consequences of its’ own construction— “You made her this way, now deal with it.” An initial illusion of soft femininity dissipates upon closer inspection, revealing the female form in all its horrible glory. Jillian MacDougall was born in Virginia at 6lbs, 4oz with neon green hair. She is now a Brooklyn-based mixed media artist creating installations, photographs, and videos that make her laugh. Her surreal works for Hysteria take you through the decades in a barbie-dominatrix dream world. Her dioramas and photographic stills on view will spark intrigue, laughter, and discussions around empowerment, BDSM, and sex work. More Here.

FAVAL, a French artist freshly settled in New York, is a multimedia artist who works with acrylics, Posca, and collages. Her paintings emit a vibrant energy, blending vivid colors with thoughtful structure. Each piece is an invitation to explore her spontaneously captured emotions. Her phrase, “always take things seriously without ever taking oneself seriously” guides her work. Discover her boldness and vivacity in each of her pieces. More Here.
